Sound Proofing A Room
When sound proofing a room there are several options available today. Here are a few factors to consider when taking on a sound proofing project. Do you want to do it yourself? What materials should you use? Is your goal to lower the volume that can be heard outside of the room? Is it to eliminate most of the volume or maybe even to completely eliminate all sound from exiting your room?
There are many sound proofing materials available in today's marketplace. The most common are Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLD) and recycled rubber sheets. These items usually meet most fire retardant requirements and posses outstanding noise barrier properties. Closed cell foam is also another option but is petroleum based and is not flame retardant in most cases. Individual research is encouraged for each project and fire safety properties in materials are always important. Contacting a sound control expert is recommended if you have questions.
Most sound proofing materials are traditionally installed over the wall insulation before the wall covering (sheet rock) is installed. Materials are generally available in 2.0mm – 3.2mm. Generally, multiple layers of sound proofing materials are encouraged. Other products are available for purchase that can be installed on the outside of your wall such as vinyl and sound deadening blankets and are more pleasing to view. Thicker materials are available for bass frequencies. For floor or platform isolation, a combination of foam and rubber is commonly used. Bass traps are also effective for low level frequencies.
Isolation booths are also available for purchase from many manufacturers and suppliers and are often very effective for those who need portable sound proofing solutions. Some manufacturers offer kits while others offer custom built booths to meet specific needs.
